The Nano Silicon Carbide (SiC) allows strengthening of many metals or reducing metal usage. The weight gains may vary depending on the material, up to 30%.


The use of very small (1%) amount of nano SiC in aluminum alloy A356 type allows significant gains in strength or weight. Studies conducted by the University of Wisconsin show an increased aluminum strength by 100% with 1% nano SiC.

  • Reinforcement of the mechanical characteristics with equal weight or lightening of the material.

  • Weight gain up to 30% for identical resistance to the original material.

The dispersion methods of nano SiC in aluminum alloys can be carried out by:

  • mixing in the molten alloy

  • mixing of dry powders

  • the electrolysis


Magnesium alloys are often used in foundries. With the same resistance, the parts made of magnesium alloy allows to obtain an important gain of weight.


Studies have shown that by adding 0.5-1% by mass of SiC nanoparticles in magnesium alloys (AZ91D type), the mechanical properties such as yield stress, tensile strength and elongation at break are clearly improved.


The mixing techniques can be by cast iron, semi-solid mixture with an ultrasonic system for better dispersion of nano SiC.
